IMMERSIVE, NARRATIVEENVIRONMENT IMMERSIVE, NARRATIVEENVIRONMENT IMMERSIVE, NARRATIVEENVIRONMENT DIRECTING FOR NARRATIVE SPACES In most narrative arts (film, theatre, novels, etc.), the director holds absolute control over the audience’s perspective - often relying on personal choice and intuition to shape the story and to guide understanding of its theme(s). Directing for immersive, narrative spaces is different. In a physical environment, there is no singular point of view - no one place from which the desired intent can be fully seen or heard. As guests navigate a space, they encounter various perspectives and develop diverse interpretations of meaning based on their choices. At the same time, the team designing the space boasts numerous individuals - each with their own perspectives, preferences, and skills. The breadth of the team and the diversity of the work they produce render it practically impossible for one individual to effectively guide all the decisions that must be made. Additionally, the environment is too complex and unpredictable to rely on conventional storytelling mechanisms such as linearity or sequence as the primary means by which guests absorb the story. Given these realities, directing for narrative spaces means governing the designers’ point of view - imbuing them with the thematic premise so that all forms of expression are centered on and coalesce around an agreed-upon set of emotions and ideas. As a consequence, directorial authority is also diffused - aligning to the numerous perspectives, conditions of encounter, and possible interpretations of meaning evoked by the environment. Each guest's experience within the space hinges upon the elements they encounter. Those components, meticulously crafted by the designers, are thematically united by the vision put forth by the director. Dispersing theme and authority ultimately promotes deep cohesion - a concentric framework whereby every experience of every guest naturally reflects the intended themes of the space.
